Princes Holdings Signs US$20m Contract with Tellabs

Princes Holdings Limited (PHL) this week signed a 3 year contract worth US$20 million, with US based Tellabs, for use of its CABLESPAN platform, which will enable PHL to provide a high speed bundled service package comprising telephony, data, and cable TV, to both residential and business customers.

The CABLESPAN system will integrate seamlessly into PHL's cable TV network, improving the reliability and quality of cable broadcast services and facilitating expanded service without disruption to subscribers. Significantly for PHL, this technology will support telephony, via cable for cable subscribers.

Commenting, Bart Bonsall, Chief Executive Officer, PHL said: "This technology enables PHL to provide a range of high speed broadband services to our cable subscribers and to compete directly with Eircom in the provision of telephony and data transmission services to residential and business customers. It also provides a cost effective means of growing our network in line with subscriber demand."

Residing outside of the home, a small CABLESPAN remote subscriber unit (RSU), can typically service 4/5 homes in an area via a hybrid fibre-coax (HFC). In addition to telephony, the CABLESPAN unit will also support more than 100 TV channels, interactive video and high speed data transmission for quicker Internet and e-mail. The HFC line may also be used to provide dial-up modem access for PCs or fax.

The CABLESPAN system functions independently of and does not effect video service technology, set top boxes or the TV itself. The RSU is powered either locally or by the network and is controlled by a host digital terminal at the headend or headend hub.

A further product aimed at non-cable areas and based around the Wireless in the Local Loop technology will be unveiled later this year. This unit will reside in the attic of individual homes and will be used to provide telephony in these areas.
